Back Parlor
As a young man, I was very interested in fashion, fashion designers, their homes, and how they lived. Yves Saint Laurent, Bill Blass, Valentino, and Givenchy all inspired me. At some point, I came across a 1978 photo of Mr Givenchy's Paris apartment at 4 rue Fabert. Needless to say, I was quite taken by his salon; its striking, timeless style has stayed with me. It was rich yet casual. The scale, the curated collection of furnishings, objects, and art, created a room of diverse periods yet remained approachable, unpretentious, and inviting. It was this beautiful space that I used as my inspiration to compose the Back Parlor at the Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse. I aimed to create my room in the spirit of Mr. Givenchy's remarkable Paris home, with a modern take. By combining large-scale art, faux suede wallcovering, a relaxing daybed, parchment tables, black leather club chairs, plaster, alabaster, brass and bronze light fixtures, silk velvet, and a silk and wool rug, these elements contribute to the richness of the space, a nod to Mr. Givenchy's memorable Paris apartment. I, too, wanted the room to be elegant, modern, and relaxed, which I hoped was accomplished. In doing so, my wish is that I curated a room in the spirit of the master tastemaker.
